About the Destination

Covering approximately 1,510 sq. km, the Mara is named in honor of the Maasai people the ancestral inhabitants of the area. The word "Mara" means "spotted" in Maa, referring to the landscape dotted with trees, cloud shadows, and scrub. Unlike many other parks, the Mara is a "National Reserve" managed by local councils, and it is surrounded by numerous private "Conservancies" that offer exclusive, low-density tourism models that directly benefit the local Maasai communities.
