Africa’s Most Thrilling Ridge Walk

Mount Meru Climbing

Destination

Overview

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain (4,566m) and the dramatic center of Arusha National Park. Often called Mount Kilimanjaro’s "little brother," it is a formidable stratovolcano that offers one of the most scenic and exhilarating treks in East Africa. The climb is famous for its abundance of wildlife on the lower slopes and a terrifyingly beautiful knife-edge ridge walk at the summit.

About the Destination

Climbing Mount Meru is an intense experience that packs diverse ecosystems into a few short days. Unlike Kilimanjaro, hikers on Meru are accompanied by an armed park ranger on the first day due to the high density of buffalo, giraffes, and elephants in the montane forest. The mountain is widely considered the best acclimatization trek for those planning to tackle Kilimanjaro, as it forces the body to adapt to 4,500m+ altitudes quickly
